WEN-JEN DENG

In 1999, she graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, France, and continued to create and exhibit at home and abroad. From the ingenious combination of oil paint and embroidery in the early stage, to the composite media oil paint with Taiwanese floral cloth as the base, or the recent natural dyed soft sculptures, woven and embroidered maps, the works are all in the world of fiber materials.

Born in Dongzhu Village, Hualien (Tourenpu, once renamed Zhutian), her grandfather was a Hakka who came here on foot in Zhudong, Hsinchu, and her mother came from Majialu, Xinxing Village. In 1862, Dazhuang (now Dongli) Siraya people used cattle and pigs In exchange for this hunting ground with the Puyuma people, Dazhuang was a settlement where the Pingpu people migrated to the east to avoid the Han people. A few years ago, the artist inquired about the household registration transcripts during the Japanese colonial period by chance, and found that the matriarchal genealogy was marked with the word “cooked”, which represented the notes of the Pingpu ethnic group and planted a seed of doubt in the artist’s heart…

Because of the blood relationship in Pingpu, the latest creations focus on Taiwan’s historical events, aboriginal culture, and ethnic integration issues. Because I love mountaineering and hiking, she have climbed many high mountains in Taiwan, and the exploration and visits of ancient trails and suburban mountains have enriched my creative experience. The subject matter and connotation combine Taiwan history, myths and legends, and migration paths of ethnic groups into tapestry paintings and map creations.
